Qatar Beach Handball Team to Start Preparations for Asian Championship
Qatar’s national beach handball team will start on Saturday preparations for the sixth Asian championship, which takes place from May 8 to 15 and qualifies for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.The Qatari team will train three days per week in April before raising the tempo in the first week of May after the domestic season wraps up on April 30.
The draw, which was carried out at the Asian confederation’s headquarters in Kuwait, placed holders Qatar in Group A along with Oman, China Taipei and Uzbekistan, while Group B has hosts Thailand, Iran, Vietnam, Afghanistan and UAE.Qatar will aim to win the title for the fourth consecutive time, having clinched the honor in 2011, 2013 and 2015, so as to secure a berth at the World Cup finals in Russia.
The Maroon’s previous World Cup participations saw them come 10th in 2010 in Turkey, seventh in Oman in 2012, before the historic achievement in 2014 in Brazil when they secured the third place and repeating the same feat in 2016 in Hungary. Meanwhile, the handball league resumes on Saturday with two games where Al Sadd take on Al Qiyada and El Jaish face Lekhwiya.
The first two rounds of the league saw Al Sadd beat Lekhwiya 30-27, El Jaish overcome Al Qiyada 32-25, El Jaish narrowly beat Al Sadd 29-28, Al Qiyada defeat Lekhwiya 30-25, while Al Gharafa and Al Rayyan had their matches postponed due to their participation in the 37th GCC men handball club cup winners championship, which Al Gharafa won after beating Al Rayyan 25-20 to land the title.
